Myth Frederick II, "Stupor Mundi"
The term "Stupor Mundi" comes from latin, it means "Wonder of the world". Usually this term was awarded to a military general who gained some importance in a battle and who was celebrated in case of victory. Among the various "Stupor Mundi" of the past we find in medieval times Frederick II of Swabia. Frederick II was born to Costanza d'Altavilla and Henry VI in Jesi, a village in the Marche region, on December 26, 1194. Unfortunately his parents died when he was three years old and he was entrusted to the care of Pope Innocent III, who tried to educate the young ruler so that he would give more power to the Church when he became emperor. In many texts that speak of the life of Frederick II, he is described as a not very tall, attractive man with red hair and bright eyes. Regarding its character, it is difficult to draw true information from sources, often biased. Apparently he was not a boring guy, in fact he was a character with a double face. In the "Chronicle", a very important historiographical work on the Swabian emperor, Salimbene de Adam describes a cunning, greedy, lustful, evil and angry ruler but also having a soul of great value, benevolent, fascinating, delicious and active. In short, a historical figure certainly very complex but at the same time admirable. In addition, the emperor was a very cultured man: he knew six languages (German, French, Italian, Latin, Greek, Arabic) and had a great passion for culture, so much so that he dedicated himself to the construction of various schools and cultural centers in southern Italy, such as the Medical School of Salerno or the University of Naples (still existing today). In particular, he made Palermo the intellectual center of the first Italian secular poetic manifestations, but not only... Thanks to him, the "Sicilian Poetic School" was born in Palermo, attended by great authors such as Jacopo da Lentini and Pier delle Vigne, a friend of Dante Alighieri. In addition to poetry, Frederick II was interested in mathematics and the natural sciences, and in fact hosted Leonardo Fibonacci at his court. One of the many characteristics for which Frederick II is remembered is then hunting, especially with the falcon: he was a great lover of hunting and also wrote a book, "Of the art of hunting with birds".
Personality, soul, character, passion... make Frederick II unique in all his splendor, a correct ruler towards the people, a ruthless warrior, but a man of great value. a real "Stupor Mundi".
